Marie Bjelke-Petersen, sister of Hans Christian, Johannes and Harald, was potentially the first women’s instructor of specialised Physical Culture classes for women.

Marie was not only involved in Physical Culture, she also loved to write and play sport.  After watching the newly found game of basketball in the 1890’s she introduced a modified version of the skills and drills which is noted as influencing the beginning of Netball in Australia.

Marie had an innovative approach and was a proud advocate for women’s health.
