Looking down from the stands on Sunday at the BJP physie girls rehearsing for the Easter Show, I felt proud to belong to such a great sport. Downstairs in the Hall of Legends, a ballroom dancing competition was in full swing and backstage there were as many tantrums as there were sequins – a bit like a set from “Dance Moms”…
But in the auditorium the physie girls just got on with it. Every one of the 274 performers did
Last weekend BJP’s 120 Year Birthday was celebrated again – this time in Queensland style! It was a great chance for our physie teachers from Qld and Far North Coast zones to catch up with physie friends, look back at the past and look forward to the future. By the end of the night, eveyone was up dancing… yes EVERYONE!
Val Connors started teaching for BJP Physie in 1948 and only recently retired. She was instrumental in establishing and maintaining the Newcastle Zone and also taught physical culture in schools for many years. Val’s family organised a family get together last weekend for her 80th birthday but, for Val, coming to the BJP 120 Year Party was more important! Of course, the family understood… physie comes first! So thanks Val for being part of the celebration and for cutting our cake. You are, without a doubt, one of our National Treasures.

Bjelke-Petersen physical culture celebrated it’s 120th birthday last Saturday night with 120 of our teachers. It was a great night of happy celebration and recognition of our long history in Australia. We particularly remembered all those who’ve gone before that made BJP what it is today. With the walls lined with old photographs, there was plenty to remember including tunics and beehives, Grace Bros, the Ballarat Squad, Athenians, the Centennary and the Opening Ceremony of the Olympic Games. There will be another celebration in Queensland this weekend at the
